great to win our own 10s tournament for only the third time in its history.

“It is brilliant to see the younger players coming through from the under 18s team as well, we have a good combination of experienced older players and young energetic players and it just all clicked on Saturday.

“Everyone contributed an outstanding performance and it is a great way to start the season.

“The other teams are all to be praised as well for playing in good spirit. All the fixtures were played, with teams borrowing players from each other if they needed to.

“We put a lot of work into this event, building on what we did last year with the ale festival and investing in bands, the bar, the marquee and more attractions for people to enjoy as well as the rugby and it seems to have paid off.

“It had a real family feel to it and that’s the way we want to keep it.”

And organisers have announced that next year’s event will be on Saturday, August 11.

Stephen added: “I think after we played at Murrayfield in April people are realising that the club has a social side that is open to everyone.

“Hopefully they will keep coming down to the club and supporting the team.”

Iain Fairnington, technical director at A Proctor Group – one of the event’s main sponsors – said: “We are proud to have been the main sponsor of the 10s tournament for 22 years now and especially delighted that Blairgowrie won the trophy again!

“It was a well organised event that was great to have been part of and it was good to see so many teams travelling so far to take part.

“Best wishes to Blairgowrie for the coming season - and for many more years of a fantastic festival.”
