Head shave fundraiser hits jackpot for charity
Support at bingo evening
A Blairgowrie couple who have both lost brothers to cancer have had their heads shaved for charity.
Kathleen and Ally Morgan raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support as they braved the shave at the Blairgowrie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland on Thursday last week during the club’s bingo evening.
Kathleen, who got a warm reception at the Legion with her new hairstyle, said: “In 2015 I lost my brother John to cancer. He lived in Cambridgeshire and I flew down to be with him a couple of times during his chemotherapy sessions.
“Six weeks later Ally’s brother Bob passed away with a different form of cancer. Both of these men were well respected in their fields of work and would give the shirts off their backs.
“This year my much loved brother-inlaw Sy passed away, leaving his family distraught.
“When you talk about cancer to other people you realise the devastation it causes whether you are the bearer of it or a family member or friend having to sit on the sidelines.
“Ally mentioned he had seen an advert on TV for Brave the Shave which Macmillan usually does every August. Believe it or not, shaving my head was on my bucket list, so doing this felt right.”
She added: “My friends Wilma Constable and Jane McKenzie shaved our heads at the Blairgowrie British Legion clubrooms and the encouragement and support from the bingo ladies will never be forgotten.
“We went on to the Dreadnought who were happy to donate and have one of our money boxes for a wee while. We send out thanks to everyone who has supported us.”
Between the pair, Kathleen and Ally have managed to raise £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Kathleen continued: “Macmillan helps cancer patients, family and supports friends with advice and support financially and emotionally and without knowing it they have helped me feel like my family who have passed have received some kind of help from me.”
