Have say at Really Interesting event

- Clare Damodaran

Residents and visitors to the town will have the opportunity this Saturday to sign a petition supporting the idea of a suitable permanent place in Blairgowrie to display artefacts from its rich culture and heritage.

The petition will be available at the Really Interesting Experience 2 event, which takes place in Blairgowrie Town Hall this Saturday, October 14.

The event, which is back for a second year following a very successful inaugural experience last year, is part of the new It’s BRAW Festival.

Last year around 300 people visited the first Really Interesting Experience, which featured the Rattray Silver Arrow and part of the meteorite that landed locally in 1917.

Many other local artefacts were on view and this year a different selection of artefacts will be showcased, although the Rattray Silver Arrow will be back.

Displays this year range from Victoriana to 1950s fashions, old kitchen utensils, old toys, military memorabilia, maps of old Rattray marked with who lived where, a model railway layout, agricultural implements, geneology material, a vintage three-square metre tapestry of the Blairgowrie area and much more.

There will also be demonstrations of spinning and weaving carried out at the event.

A spokesperson for the organisers commented: “In view of the recent publicity about the lack of a museum or heritage centre in Blairgowrie and Rattray, it is hoped that this exhibition will go some way to support any plans for a permanent home for these interesting local cultural objects.

“So we will have a petition at the event to gather support for the idea of finding a suitable, permanent place in the town to display artefacts that are both interesting and have a Blairgowrie connection.

“In a short space of time and with limited resources, a huge range of artefacts for this display have been promised.

“All it requires is an equally large number of people to support the event, and the petition, to make something happen.”

The event runs from 11am to 3pm and will show the sort of artefacts that could be displayed in a permanent home such as a museum or heritage centre.
