Have a say on fit families project

- Clare Damodaran

The Fit, Fun Families initiative, co-ordinated by the Eastern Perthshire Community Sports Hub (EPCSH), is currently consulting with parents and youngsters in the area to find out which activities the project should provide.

The project received funding from the last round of grants from the Eastern Perthshire Decides scheme, part of the community action partnerships, and aims to encourage parents, carers and children to get active by offering an opportunity to try new sports and recreational activities in a fun and supportive environment.

Fun, Fit Families is open to the families of pupils at Alyth, Coupar Angus and Rattray primary schools.

Stephanie Eaden, assistant community sports hub officer at Perth and Kinross Council, explained:“We are carrying out a consultation at the moment to find out which activities people would like to see take place as part of the project, which is to get families working together to get active.

“We’re working with the three schools - Alyth, Coupar Angus and Rattray - that the project is open to and have also consulted with parent and toddler groups.

“The idea is that we will focus the groups that we run around the needs of the communities and the demands from the families within the schools, developing a bespoke and flexible programme.

“If it’s flexible and works around the families involved then hopefully that will encourage people to get involved and take part.

“We could consider offering everything from hockey to kayaking to football for example if there was demand.”

Stephanie was keen to stress that it isn’t just sporting activities that will be on offer through the programme.

She said:“There will be cooking and arts and crafts as well as inclusive physical activities.”

Anyone who is interested in taking part in the project and who is the parent or carer of a pupil or pupils at any of the three schools, or who has suggestions for activities, can contact Active Schools co-ordinator Caroline Lawrie on email CLawrie@ liveactive.co.uk
