Top 10 iconic trail items announced

Vote on story of CateranTrail in 100 objects

- Clare Damodaran

The top ten objects telling the story of the Cateran Trail have been revealed.

Earlier this year, 100 objects telling the story of the 64-km trail were chosen by a panel of local people for a project that was part of the Cateran’s Common Wealth initiative.

The Cateran’s Common Wealth initiative has been in development since 2013 and offers a range of activities and events aimed at celebrating the region’s ‘common wealth’.

‘A Story of the Cateran Trail in 100 Objects’ launched in November last year and aimed to find items that tell the story of the trail’s history.

Local residents and visitors to the area were invited to nominate objects, landscapes or people that they thought contributed to the story of Cateran country, and from all the nominations put forward, the panel chose the top 100, which were announced in May this year.

The chosen objects formed the basis of a new booklet, an exhibition at Alyth Museum, a series of talks and a set of digitised lesson plans for local primary schools.

And over the summer, people were invited to vote for their top 10 objects from the full list of 100.

Clare Cooper, co-producer of the Cateran’s Common Wealth project, described the top 10 as “a lovely, broad-ranging list that draws from each of the three themes of people, places and landscapes all around the Cateran Trail”.

The top ten list was topped by the Cateran Café, which received the most number of votes, closely followed by the Berries and Cherries tartan.

In third place were the Den o’ Alyth, Glenshee Kirk and Alyth, while in fourth place were Cargill’s Leap and the Reekie Linn.

The Bamff Beavers were number five on the list with the Upper Lunch Hut coming in at six.

In seventh place were Alyth Arches and a curling stone, while Barry Hill, Kirkton of Glenisla, Oakbank Mill and red squirrels all tied in eighth place.

A range of attractions tied for ninth place, including Kirkmichael, the rivers - Isla, Alyth Burn, Shee Water, Blackwater, Ardle, Ericht, and Lornty Burn - Auchintaple Loch, Clach a’ Mhoid (or the Stone of Justice), Kirkmichael Village Shop, trail markers, Hamish Henderson, and buzzards.

And there was another tie for tenth place between Fermtouns, Blairgowrie and Rattray, Coupar Abbey, Diarmuid’s Tomb, lime kilns, tower houses, Blairgowrie Drunks Cart, Major William Caulfeild, the Caterans, Glen Beag and Mount Blair.

Clare thanked everyone involved in the project and who took the time to vote.
