\Coupar Angus

Abbey Church Rev Ian Bentley led the services at Bendochy and Coupar Angus Abbey. Bible readings from Ecclesiastes ch 3 v 1 to 14, a classic old testament wisdom ‘a time for

everything’, and 2 Corinthians ch 1 v 3 to 7, a message from Paul on one of his three journeys around the Mediterranean spreading God’s word, were read at Bendochy by Graeme McNeil and Irene Henderson at the Abbey. Although celebrating harvest, Rev Bentley reminded the congregation that God’s bounty could be celebrated every day as there is evidence of new growth in people’s lives all around them. He likened people’s lives to merry-go-rounds and rollercoasters - some go fast and some go slow, there are ups and downs, some of which are steeper than others. No life is smooth. People must learn to use their faith in the spiritual world to help them cope, especially when life is not going well in the real world. Rev Bentley gave examples of songs through the decades which reflect upon the ups and downs of life and remind people that they come through the suffering to a time of good. Depression holds back the human spirit. In the bible reading, Paul reminded those gathered that there is always a restoration of hope, that they must maintain faith regardless of the upside and downside of life. Prayers thanked God for the gift of life and asked help for those suffering in body and mind, those suffering from natural disasters and those from terrorism and evil. The closing hymns were Amazing Grace and Great is thy faithfulness. The Prayer group meets at 2pm every Wednesday and the door is open to all. Bible study will resume after the October holiday and thanks to all who helped and enjoyed the Friendly Friday last week. The next one will be on November 3, and is open to everyone. EPACTS is planning to print a 2018 calendar to feature Bible verses and photographs taken by local photographers. To order a copy at a cost of £3 speak to Helen Pithie. The St Anne’s Lunch Club meets on Tuesdays for toasties, soup, cheese and biscuits served with tea or coffee. The club is looking for help. Anyone who wants to help out can speak to Anne Richards or Helen Pithie. A new boiler will be installed at the Abbey Church during the week beginning Monday, October 16. The work should take four to five days. The Sunday service at the Abbey Church is from 11.15am to 12.15pm. Intimations for next Sunday to Ellen at emcgibbon@sky.com or telephone 07541 009398 by Thursday. Autumn fair The autumn fair is on Saturday, October 14 from 10am to 2pm. Entry is £2 for adults, which includes refreshments. Children go free when accompanied by an adult. Soup will be on sale from noon.
