Bonfire night’s set to be cracking

Plans underway to hold fireworks display in park

- Clare Damodaran

Blairgowrie and Rattray looks set to have its very own bonfire celebration this year, thanks to plans put forward by the community council.

The move to bring back one of the town’s traditions was first mooted at a meeting of Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Council.

And although funding has yet to be secured for the event, it is hoped that the company behind the spectacular fireworks on Braemar Night and at the Blast in the Park event at Larghan Park in Coupar Angus, Blast Designs, will also be involved in this latest venture.

Community councillor Morag Young is behind the idea.

She said: “In a bid to bring things back to Blairgowrie and Rattray that we used to enjoy when we were kids, we’re hoping to organise the town’s first bonfire night in quite some time.

“We raised the idea with Perth and Kinross Council who had no objection so we needed to do a risk assessment.

“We’ve applied for funding for the cost of the fireworks and are waiting to hear back about that.

“The idea is that there will be a bonfire at Davie Park, just like there used to be, fireworks, and some local food vendors.”

Morag added that she had already had a site visit at Davie Park with Sandy Thomson, chair of Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Football Club and a member of the community council, and that they had identified a suitable spot for the bonfire.

She said: “We’ll be writing to local residents to let them know what we’re hoping to do.

“And there will be collection buckets on the night to get donations so that hopefully this will become a regular feature on the Blairgowrie and Rattray events calendar.”

Blast in the Park in Coupar Angus, which always takes place on the Friday closest to Bonfire Night, regularly attracts thousands of spectators - many of whom make the short journey to Larghan Park from Blairgowrie - to enjoy the impressive firework display, the bonfire, and additional attractions such as food stalls and a fun fair.

The Blairgowrie event would be held on the Saturday, November 4, this year, to allow both events to take place.

It is envisaged that the Blairgowrie event will take place from 6.45pm.

The community council is keen to hear from anyone who may have spare pallets or wood that they can donate for the fire.
