Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by the Rev Andy Graham and included the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The readings were by John Easson from Psalm 80 vs 7-15 and Matthew ch21 vs 33-46. In his sermon Rev Graham drew on the parable from Matthew’s Gospel about a vineyard, its owner and the bad tenants he rented it to. Following the harvest the tenants refused to provide a share of the crop as rent and abused and killed the servants the owner had sent to collect it. The owner was tolerant and sent more servants but these too were rejected and abused by the tenants. Eventually the owner sent his own son, expecting the tenants to respect him, but they beat and killed him as well. In this parable the owner represents God, the ‘vineyard’ are the people, the tenants are the religious leaders, the servants are the prophets

who remain faithful to God and the ‘son’ is Jesus. The message from this story was directed at the Pharisees who were guilty of poor leadership in rejecting Jesus and plotting His demise, for in rejecting Jesus they were rejecting God. However, the message is relevant to us in our lives today. What sort of tenants are we? How often do we fail to listen and obey the word of God, failing to bear ‘good fruit’ through, for example, lack of love and charity? But, God forgives repeatedly and we are reminded of His undying love for us through the sacrifice of His son who suffered so much on our behalf and which we acknowledge as we share the bread and wine during the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The organist, Austin Wilkie, played Invention number 1 BWV772 by JS Bach, Communion by Alexandre Guilmant and Toccata in F by Charles-Marie Widor. The Prayer Group meets at 2pm in the Abbey Church each Wednesday, all welcome. The Bible Study Group will continue on Wednesday, November 1, at 7.15pm looking at Luke’s Gospel, ch 13. All are welcome to join in this friendly discussion. This Friday, November 3, is the next ‘Friendly Friday’.
