Alyth gets into the festive spirit

Great fun at Victorian Day and lights event

- David Phillips

Alyth residents, and visitors from around the area, braved the cold but dry weather on Saturday to support their annual Victorian Day, followed in the evening by the switchon of the Christmas lights and decorations.

Although there were noticeably fewer business staff and proprietors working in fancy dress there were several who enlivened the day, including the Alyth Hotel where staff adopted a burlesque theme, the Wee Gift Shop where there was a country music theme, and the Cafe in the Square who had a Toy Story theme.

The Victorian theme was supported by the Thrifty One staff, and the Singing Kettle.

Staff at Davidsons the Chemist donned festive Christmas jumpers for the day.

It was a busy day in the Airlie Street Hall with a coffee morning for 2nd Alyth Brownies first thing, which raised more than £1100 for their funds.

And after the coffee morning a number of local groups and organisations set up fundraising stalls in the hall.

In the evening crowds joined the parade from the Guide Hut - led by Alyth and District Pipe Band under the direction of Pipe Major Gordon Barton and Santa on a motorised sleigh - to the square to see the Christmas lights switched on,

As there is no community council in Alyth at the moment there was no citizen of the year to perform the ceremony, so it was done by Rod MacFarlane, chair of the lights committee.

Entertainment at the square also included music from Perthshire Brass.

Rod thanked everyone who helped make the town colourful and attractive for the festive period.
