Merry-go-round as another funfair moved

- Mike Thomson michael.thomson@newsquest.co.uk

A SECOND Borders funfair has been moved due to the wet weather.

The council announced last week that the event in Peebles would be relocated due to safety fears over “awful” ground conditions.

And on Friday the local authority revealed that plans have changed for the upcoming Galashiels funfair.

“The funfair which was due to be located in the Public Park, Galashiels from April 11, will now be relocated,” said a Scottish Borders Council spokesperson.

“Due to the prolonged poor weather conditions, the Public Park is not suitable to host the funfair.

“The fair will go ahead, but it will now be located in Netherdale Car Park, Nether Road, Galashiels.”

The Peebles event, which is normally held in Victoria Park, took place in the Kingsmeadows Car Park over the weekend.

Tweeddale East councillor Julie

Pirone led the Scottish Borders Council response.

Speaking ahead of the event, she said: “I am grateful to officers for their diligent work on this emerging situation and for the funfair operator who has taken on board the concerns of local people and made changes to its operation.

“It is a true example of everyone working together.”

Sepa issued a flood alert for the Borders on Tuesday, with a warning, which is a level up in severity, in place on the east coast of the region.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for rain on Tuesday.

It said that some flooding was possible due to the levels of rainfall over the weekend and at the start of the week.

The rain is meant to ease in the Borders today and Friday, with tomorrow expected to be dry.

It is predicted to return on Saturday, alongside gusty winds.
