‘KING’ FOR A DAY

Selivanovs steals the show against Volosinas, writes Thomas Latham

-

THE main event of SM Promotions’ show at Treetops Hotel featured Peterheadbased Latvian “King” Artur Selivanovs in action against Simas Volosinas, of Lithuania, in a scheduled six-round contest. There was a tentative opening to the bout, as Selivanovs looked to work his way into range behind his jab, forcing the experienced Volosinas onto the back foot. Some sharp combinations from Artur started to land midway through the opener, as Selivanovs began to take control.

Volosinas attempted to make a breakthrough in the second as he launched wild flurries, although they failed to make any impact on Selivanovs. A stinging three-punch combo from Artur quashed Simas’ ambition.

The third and fourth followed a similar pattern, as Selivanovs landed eyecatching shots, and Volosinas struggled to get off the ropes. The final stages brought some impressive body shots, with Selivanovs moving through the gears and showcasing his boxing ability. Referee Kenny Pringle returned a deserved 60-55 decision in favour of Selivanovs.

The bill also included the debut of Kristen Fraser – a favourite with the fans – who faced Bargoed’s Lana Cooper over six-twos.

A fast pace was maintained by Scotland’s Fraser throughout the match, although Cooper offered very little offensively, and settled on survival at an early stage. Fraser showed little sign of first-fight nerves, as she worked the body well and switched her attacks effectively. Mr Pringle scored 60-54 in favour of the debutant.

In a four-rounder, Scotsman Billy Stuart made his pro bow against Latvia’s Dmitrijs Gutmans. The novice produced an impressive performance to earn a 39-37 decision from Mr Pringle.

THE VERDICT Selivanovs’ clean combinations see him home on the cards.
