WEEKEND HANGOVERS
AFTER reviewing Hassan N’dam N’jikam’s highly contentious points victory over Ryota Murata (Saturday May 20) at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan, the WBA announce that a rematch will be ordered.
The organisation’s secondary belt was up for grabs (why the title exists when Gennady Golovkin has been actively defending the WBA championship since 2010 is another matter entirely) and WBA president Gilberto Mendoza says: “I feel angry and frustrating for not being able to serve the sport with the right decisions... let me apologise to Ryota Murata, Teiken Promotions and all Japanese boxing fans.”
SHAMED LAWSON SUSPENDED
LEON LAWSON – uncle of supermiddleweight Andre Dirrell – has been suspended indefintely by the WBC after assaulting boxer Jose Uzcategui on Saturday (see page 30).
“The WBC is suspending indefinitely Mr Leon Lawson from participating in any WBC sanctioned fight in any form or manner,” a WBC statement reads about the trainer who is wanted by police. “The actions, which have been seen all over the world, in which Mr Lawson attacks and punches with bare fists fighter Jose Uzcategui have created regrettable damages to our sport.”
