WADI CAMACHO
Nick Bond talks to a man whose idea of hell is a theme park
When and why you started boxing:
I started boxing when I was 21 years old. [Ex-pro] Garry Delaney brought me to the gym, as I was always in trouble at the time.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Evander Holyfield, because of his boxing style and his will to never give up.
Best fight you’ve seen:
Floyd Mayweather versus Ricky Hatton. It was explosive!
Personal career highlight:
My best achievement in boxing to date is winning the [2013 cruiserweight] Prizefighter
tournament.
Toughest opponent:
Each fighter I face is my toughest opponent, because they bring something different to the ring every time.
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
Remaining calm and coolheaded is definitely a key strength of mine, but I do tend to overthink things, which is a weakness.
Training tip:
Always push past your limits and have a strong team to encourage you on your off days.
Favourite meal/restaurant:
Wasabi is delicious.
Best friends in boxing:
My coach Terry Coulter and my team.
Other sportsman you would like to be:
Usain Bolt. His speed is phenomenal.
Last film/tv show you saw:
[ TV series] Power.
Who would play you in a film of your life:
Will Smith, because he’s funny like me!
Have you ever been starstruck:
No, I’ve never been starstruck.
Last time you cried:
I cried the week before my last fight, because everything was going wrong – even my house got broken into. It was stressful.
Best advice received:
Be patient – your time will come.
Worst rumour about yourself:
A rumour I once heard about myself is that I bit someone during a fight. This isn’t true.
Something not many people know about you:
I’m scared of roller-coaster rides. I used to make up excuses to my friends as to why I couldn’t go to Thorpe Park with them!
