EVAN ARMSTRONG R.I.P THE EBAS were rocked by news of the death of former British and Commonwealth featherweight champion Evan Armstrong (Ayr). As a pro boxing between 1963 and ’74, Armstrong beat the likes of Jackie Brown, Jimmy Revie, Tommy Glencross, Vernon Sollas and Alan Richardson, and won a Lonsdale Belt outright. He also went 15 rounds with the great Cuban Jose Legra. A fuller tribute will be in next week’s issue.

HEDDWYN TAYLOR R.I.P READER Russell Hughes writes with news of the passing of former South Wales promoter Heddwyn Taylor.

Russell notes: “Heddwyn was a very popular promoter in South Wales, promoting many great nights in Ebbw Vale and the Double Diamond Club for the likes of Johnny Owen, Roy John and many more. Heddwyn’s rivalry with Eddie Thomas brought us many memorable evenings. There was a very good turnout for Heddwyn’s funeral on June 22.

“He sadly lost his battle with cancer before reaching his 80th birthday.”
