‘EMANUEL STEWARD STARTED TRAINING ME AT THE AGE OF 14. I’VE WORKED HARD EVER SINCE’ Hasim Rahman Jnr

James Slater talks to the son of a former world heavyweight king

-

When and why you started boxing:

I was 10 years old – my dad [former WBC and IBF heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman] wouldn’t let me go any earlier. I got into [American] football for a while, but then Emanuel Steward started training me at the age of 14, and I’ve worked hard ever since.

Favourite all-time fighter:

It’s too obvious to say my dad! I’d say Andre Ward. He’s so hard to hit. He’s slick, and he can switch from orthodox to southpaw, like myself.

Best fight you’ve seen:

My dad against Lennox Lewis – the first fight. I can sit and watch all five rounds all day.

Personal career highlight:

I had around 89 amateur fights. My highlight was winning three national titles. However, my best is still to come, as the pro game is more suited to my style.

Toughest opponent:

I really can’t say I’ve met him yet! Nobody stopped me or outclassed me at amateur level.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

Best: my ability to adapt. Worst: I can back straight up at times.

Training tip:

Find a coach who genuinely cares about you, and listen to them at all times.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

I love pasta. Best friends in boxing: Luis Arias. He’s 18-0. We grew up together and we’ve been through so much together. We’re family. Other sportsman you would like to be:

Maybe a football player – American football. I can’t imagine anything better than being a boxer, though. Last film/tv show you saw: I love a great comedy film. I also love all Denzel Washington films. Who would play you in a film of your life:

Michael B. Jordan, out of Creed. Have you ever been starstruck: I’ve been around celebrities my whole life, and my dad taught me that everyone eats, sleeps and breathes the same as me. My favourite celebrity that I’ve met is Jay-z, who I met at my dad’s fight with Evander Holyfield. Last time you cried: When my dad lost to Oleg Maskaev. Best advice received: The best punch in boxing is the jab. The second best punch is the jab! Everything works off the jab. Worst rumour about yourself: Nothing yet, but I got used to reading things about my dad – stuff we never paid any attention to anyway. Something not many people know about you:

I really like to sing, but I only sing in front of my wife!
