KATIE GETS HER CHANCE
MONDAY September 11, 2017
AFTER only six professional fights, Irish star Katie Taylor will box for a world title when she meets WBA lightweight champion Anahi Sanchez on October 28.
The bout is part of the undercard to Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title defence against Kubrat Pulev at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a show broadcast on Sky Sports Box Office.
A third world title contest on the bill sees Brit Kal Yafai defend his WBA super-flyweight belt against Sho Ishida from Japan.
The news is announced by promoter Eddie Hearn at a press conference in Cardiff.
After an outstanding amateur career, topped by gold at the 2012 London Olympics, Taylor turned pro in November and won her first five pro fights in the UK, before scoring a victory in the USA last time out in July.
Sanchez, from Argentina, has a 17-2 (9) record and won her title as recently as Saturday (September 9), with a sixth-round stoppage of compatriot Cecilia Sofia Mena in Villa Lujan.
Sanchez had previously held the Interim WBA featherweight and IBF super-feather titles, never being beaten for the former and losing the latter in May to Maeva Hamdouche in France.
