CANELO VS WBC

-

BEFORE Alvarez challenged Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleight title in 2015, the Puerto Rican decided he wasn’t going to pay the sanctioning fees, nor sign an agreement that he’d grant Golovkin the next shot, which meant the belt was only there for Canelo’s taking. He won the fight but later followed Cotto, and relinquished the title while citing reasons he felt pressured by the sanctioning body to hastily arrange a defence against “GGG”. The WBC awarded the belt to Golovkin, and Canelo is yet to forgive them. Shortly after this showdown was announced he made it clear he would only contest the IBF and WBA titles. Golovkin and the WBC have since made it clear the famous green belt will be on the line on September 16. And not only that, they’ve also created one of their one-off ‘special’ belts for the occasion. If Canelo wins, then, he’s going to have a heck of a job avoiding a WBC belt.
