TERRIFYING TYSON
Scared Seldon collapses in quick time, writes Daniel Herbert
TWO words headlined our front page after Mike Tyson blew away Bruce Seldon in 109 seconds at Las Vegas: SHEER TERROR!
It was the fourth fastest win of Tyson’s career but our report noted that fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena voiced their displeasure and that even Iron Mike seemed surprised; Seldon was down twice but the first time it did not appear a punch had landed, and the second he theatrically shook his head and wobbled at the knees.
This was Tyson’s fourth fight after serving a prison sentence for rape and the third, six months earlier, had seen him stop Frank Bruno in three rounds for the WBC heavyweight title. We noted how Bruno’s defeat - much criticised at the time - saw the Briton put forth much greater resistance than Seldon managed against Tyson.
Only Seldon’s WBA title was at stake as the man from Atlantic City put up one of the most abject defences in history, with Boxing News declaring that not since Buster Douglas flopped in three rounds against Evander Holyfield six years earlier had a champion bowed out in such a blaze of shame.
