SHEEDY RETIRES

-

Glyn Rhodes tells Matt Christie why Sam has decided to hang up his gloves

AFTER losing his Commonwealth middleweight title to Liam Cameron on Saturday October 13 [see page 20], Sam Sheedy has decided to retire from boxing at the age of 29.

The Sheffield boxer’s coach, Glyn Rhodes, informed Boxing News about the decision after what he called a “difficult weekend.”

Sheedy, 18-3 (4), was stopped in eight rounds and rushed to hospital.

“I’ve got to say the doctors and the paramedics were brilliant,” Rhodes said. “Sam took some stupid shots in the fight and he was rushed to hospital. The ambulance had the blue lights on and the sirens were going. It was a nervous time.”

Rhodes was in hospital with Sheedy until he got the all-clear, eventually getting home at 4am. Sheedy then spent Sunday considering his future in the sport.

“I’m glad he’s decided to retire,” Rhodes continued. “Sam has never really been in love with boxing. But he’s happy with his achievements and would like to thanks all his fans and everyone in the sport.

“Sam has had his problems in his last few fights with his nose. Unfortunately, that’s something of an occupational hazard.”

Though the gloves have come off and the hooter can get some rest, Sheedy will continue to work in the sport alongside Rhodes.

“He’s getting his trainer’s licence. He’s been coming to the gym since he was 11 years old. He’s always been a great asset to the gym and everyone loves him.”
