Hatton Jnr earns his first title

CAMPBELL HATTON looks to be a chip off the old block.

Cheered on by father Ricky and uncle Matthew, the 17 year old, boxing for Roy Richardson’s Boxing Academy, captured his first national title at North Solihull Leisure Centre, outpointing Steve

Mcdonagh (Fairburn) in the Class B final of the Junior Development Championships at 60kgs.

The shorter fighter by a couple of inches, Hatton repeatedly pushed Mcdonagh back with jabs and kept him under pressure with his terrier-like aggression, moving his upper body well as he attacked.

“I see a lot of myself in him,” said Ricky.

“He has the boxing ability, but doesn’t always use it. The jab kept landing, but he has that fire in him. He wants to fight.”

Best of Sunday’s senior finals was the Class A clash at 81kgs, won by

Zoltan Csanadi (All Stars) on a split points vote over Tamworth’s David Butlin.

For two rounds, Csanadi pressed and Butlin boxed – and there was tremendous action in the last when Butlin stopped moving and slugged with the Londoner.

Csanadi made Butlin’s knees dip with a left hook in an exchange at the start of the round – and Butlin slammed back to bloody his nose.

There was a big drive from Csanadi in the last minute and that probably won him the fight.

There was a dramatic turnaround in the Class B final at 81kgs where Marcin Lewicki (MTK) survived a horror second round when he took two counts to hand Tim Douglin

( Whitley) a count in the third.

The crowd were denied a barnstorming final minute or so after the doctor ruled out Douglin with a cut to his left ear.

Elsewhere in Class B, the hugely popular Conah Walker (Merridale) added the 69kgs title to the 75kgs Class A title he won in 2015 with a split points win over Alfie Winter

(Battlebridge) that really should have been unanimous. Winter wanted to stand off and box – but couldn’t keep the tank-like Walker off him. Walker was all over him in the third and forced two counts.

Army super-heavyweight Josh Woods took just 40 seconds to beat Alex Bloomer (Collyhurst & Moston), handing him three counts, in the Class B final and in the Class A final at 91&kgs Delicious Iwuchukwu ( Jewellery Quarter) beat Whitehawk southpaw Harvey Dykes on a split with a strong finish.

Also in Class A, Aaron Prospere (Heart of Portsmouth) looked unfortunate to concede a split decision to Nick Leahy

(Fitzpatricks). Prospere landed a lot of jabs in the opening two rounds before a closer last.

Pick of the junior winners was Umar Khan, a long-limbed box of tricks from Repton who handed Sam Graves (Kingston) two counts in the last on the way to a unanimous points win, and Lauren Morris (Moulescombe) impressed in the Female Class A final at 81kgs.

She handed Aneta Sobotka

( Jewellery Quarter) two counts to secure a second-round stoppage win.
