LONG LIVE THE KRONK
IT was sad to hear that the original Kronk Gym building was destroyed by fire last month. The gym is as synonymous with Detroit as its motor industry or the Motown record company. Under the great trainer Emanuel Steward [ right], the gym attracted fighters from all over the world to Detroit, including Britain’s own Dennis Andries, who resurrected his career wearing the iconic colours of the gym.
During its heyday, the Kronk became the most famous gym in boxing, but more importantly offered hope to so many young kids who walked through its doors.
Although the building had been derelict for some years, it was still of massive historical significance, and it’s a shame to see it lost. Steven Bond, Castleford
LAY OFF LARA
ERISLANDY LARA is one boxer who rarely receives the praise he’s due. Everyone who isn’t Mexican or employed by Golden Boy Promotions will testify who the real winner was when he faced off with Canelo Alvarez back in 2014.
The Cuban master recently boxed an excellent fight against a rising fighter and former Olympian in the shape of Terrell Gausha. His use of the ring space, shot selection and movement were absolute genius. Some of the clueless comments made by US commentators and members of the media are confusing. Those who are employed to give impartial expert advice should know better; it might help educate the more casual fan or newcomer to the sport, and help prevent the uncalled-for booing that Lara had to endure at times from the crowd during the Gausha fight. TRIBUTE TO TERRY
I WAS saddened to learn of the death of Britain’s oldest surviving former world champion, Terry Downes, who passed away last month. Terry was a fearless middleweight who earned the nickname “The Paddington Express” due to his aggressive fighting style.
In fact, respected boxing historian Gilbert Odd described him as one of the “gutsiest boxers” he’d ever seen fight; a statement I would have to agree with.
However, aggression wasn’t the only attribute Terry brought to the ring – he was also a deceptively skilful fighter. This was best demonstrated during his performance against Joey Giardello. I attended this bout, which Terry won on a points decision. I am happy that I witnessed this larger-than-life character box at the peak of his career, and I’d like to send my sincerest condolences to Terry’s family and friends. Harry Doherty, Gillingham
