IN THE GARDEN...
The three Madison Square Gardens have hosted many memorable occasions, writes Daniel Herbert
1. HARRY GREB W PTS 15 GENE TUNNEY
Tunney only ever suffered one loss when windmill Greb outlasted him for the American 175lbs title in 1922.
2. JOCK MCAVOY W KO 1 EDDIE RISKO
In 1936 Mcavoy sensationally dropped world middle champ Risko six times but the Mob-controlled American’s title wasn’t on the line.
3. HENRY ARMSTRONG W PTS 15 LOU AMBERS
Already feather and welter king, Armstrong won a third world title by dethroning lightweight champ Ambers in August 1938.
4. SUGAR RAY ROBINSON W PTS 15 TOMMY BELL
Five days before Christmas 1946, the Sugarman became world champ for the first time.
5. BILLY FOX W RSF 4 JAKE LAMOTTA
Lamotta later admitted throwing this November 1947 10-rounder so the Mob would allow him to fight for the world title (they did).
6. EMILE GRIFFITH W KO 12 BENNY PARET
Tragedy struck in March 1962 as Cuba’s Paret, who had taunted Griffith pre-fight, lost his life after an unmerciful beating.
7. JOE FRAZIER W PTS 15 MUHAMMAD ALI
In March 1971, Frazier floored and beat Ali in a battle of unbeatens for the world heavyweight title.
8. ROBERTO DURAN W RSF 13 KEN BUCHANAN
Stylish Scot Buchanan lost his lightweight title to a low-blow induced defeat.
9. EVANDER HOLYFIELD DREW 12 LENNOX LEWIS
The Real Deal never won a world title fight in the Garden, but he did retain his belts with a generous draw.
10. BERNARD HOPKINS W RSF 12 FELIX TRINIDAD
In a fight postponed two weeks because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, B-hop boxed superbly in September 2001.
