HERE COMES THE SUMMERS
Matt Bozeat sees Ricky return to winning ways against sub
BILSTON NOVEMBER 25 ★★★ WHOLE SHOW ★★★ ATMOSPHERE
THE first professional show at the International Banqueting Suite was topped by Tipton light-heavyweight Ricky Summers, coming back from a competitive points loss to British champion Frank Buglioni this summer.
After Joe Sherriff was ruled out of a clash for the vacant Midlands Area title through tonsillitis, Summers instead faced Gonzalo Romero, and dominated the lofty Spaniard over eight-threes, with referee-for-the-night Sean Messer scoring 80-72.
Summers had Romero over in the second, a right-hand counter flinging him into the ropes, and after that, the Spaniard didn’t leave too many gaps. Summers upped the tempo in the last, pinned Romero in a neutral corner – and his gumshield conveniently popped out, giving him a welcome break.
Jason Welborn has stood still since thrashing Marcus Morrison in March – and returned with a sixthrees points win over Plymouth’s honest Christian Hoskin Gomez.
Hoskin Gomez, who ended the fight with a nick on his left eyebrow, gave him a good workout. Every time Rowley Regis’ Welborn opened up, Hoskin Gomez found a response. The cleaner, better quality work came from Welborn – Hoskin Gomez was told off for slapping with his left hook in the second – as they took it in turns to unload on each other, and that was reflected in the 60-55 score.
Bloxwich’s polished James Beech Jnr was a 60-54 winner over Spain-based Elvis Guillen. Both were cut in the third after heads clashed, Beech on his left eyebrow, Guillen just above his hairline, and after that, Beech kept it long.
Stoke first-timer Nathan Heaney, leaving it late to turn over at 28, kept Manchester southpaw Darryl Sharp at arm’s length to win every session of their four-rounder, and over the same distance, Lithuanian Dmitrij Kalinovskij used his height and reach advantages effectively to outpoint Wolverhampton debutant Anthony Woollery 40-37.
THE VERDICT Summers defeats substitute Romero, and hopes for a rescheduled clash with Sherriff.
