FLYNN TAKES THE WIN
Chris Glover is ringside to see local Charlie ease to a shutout success
CHARLIE FLYNN demonstrated his class as he overcame the ever-tough Fonz Alexander over six rounds on Alex Morrison’s show at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Flynn – a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist – dominated the fight from the outset, showing that his recent relocation back to Scotland for training has seemingly paid dividends.
Flynn worked effectively on the outside, controlled the ring, and picked his shots well against Newark’s always-game Alexander. Fonz did have spells where he attempted to launch attacks, but the impressive Flynn swiftly rebuffed these advances with his cute skills.
Displaying why he has been labelled as one of Scotland’s most highly rated prospects, Flynn bemused Alexander in the latter stages, as he put together some slick combinations and showcased his improved variety. Referee Darren Maxwell scored the contest 60-54 in favour of Newarthill’s Flynn.
On the undercard, Flynn’s fellow 2014 Commonwealth Games competitor Joe Ham laboured to a points victory over Spain-based Ecuadorian Jefferson Vargas. After a closely contested fight in which both boxers enjoyed periods of success, referee Kenny Pringle scored the bout 58-56 in favour of Glasgow’s Ham.
Kirkintilloch’s Ally Black came through his test against the gutsy Lithuanian Edvinas
Puplauskas with a hard-fought decision win. Both men landed big shots during a contest that was scored 40-37 by Mr Maxwell.
Glasgow’s Stewart Burt comfortably overcame Russian-lithuanian Andrej Cepur on the scorecards. The local man was in control throughout. Mr Pringle tallied 40-36 in Burt’s favour.
THE VERDICT After moving into double figures for victories, Flynn will be aiming to push on in 2018.
