EASY DOES IT FOR LEE

Andy Whittle watches Clayton dominate against Bjorklund

-

AN increasingly lacklustre performance over eight from Lewisham-based Swede Edward

Bjorklund meant that Heywood’s Lee Clayton – cut by the left eye – never needed to move into top gear at the Village Hotel. Referee-forthe-night Darren Sarginson scored 80-72 to Clayton on this Kieran Farrell promotion.

I wasn’t the only ringsider who thought Evesham terrier Brett Fidoe, busier and landing the more eye-catching shots for the most part, had done enough over eight to complete the double over Altrincham’s George Brennan – a boxer he edged out over the four-round distance in December. That was also without taking into the account the point Brennan had docked for holding late in the sixth. The man in the middle though saw things differently and tallied 76-75 for Brennan.

Macclesfield’s tall Jake Haigh didn’t have things all his own way against stocky Birmingham novice Jarrett Doherty, winning 58-57 at the conclusion of an always-watchable encounter.

Having taken the opener and edged the second, the Ricky Hatton-trained Haigh then neglected his jab and allowed his opponent to work his way inside and narrow the gap in the middle stanzas. With very little to choose between the pair in the closing two rounds it was always going to be close, and so it proved.

A one-sided show-opener between hardhitting Irishman Dylan Moran and experienced Stourbridge operator Kevin Mccauley saw the well-supported Dungarvan man impress in picking up his fourth straight win.

Energetic and powerful from the outset, Moran seldom allowed Mccauley a moment’s respite and earned his opponent’s plaudits at the finish, as well as a 40-36 victory. This was Mccauley’s 187th outing.
