SCHOFIELD PASSES TEST
Charlie is made to work hard by Jones, writes Andy Whittle from ringside
ON VIP Promotions’ offering at Oldham Leisure Centre, tall Mancunian Charlie
Schofield took on his toughest opponent to date in the shape of Denaby Main’s Adam
Jones. Referee Darren Sarginson had it 59-57 at the finish, giving the last session to Schofield, which duly cemented his victory in a competitive fight.
Failsworth’s Danny Wright shut out Lithuania’s Edvinas Puplauskas, with the 60-54 card turned in by referee Mark Lyson reflecting what had gone before.
Oldham’s Joe Eko exchanged punches once more with Nuneaton veteran Kristian Laight and repeated a debut win of eight months earlier by dominating en route to a 40-36 victory for Mr Sarginson.
There were inside-the-distance wins for local pair Jack Kilgannon and Andy
Kremner in contests slated for four. Kilgannon halted Latvia’s Raimonds Sniedze – who had only just had a point deducted by Mr Lyson for continued holding – three seconds shy of the halfway mark. Meanwhile, Kremner dropped comebacking Chatham man Ricky
Rose on three occasions with body shots before third man Lyson stopped it with 24 seconds remaining.
Having floored Bulgarian Teodor Nikolov twice midway through the fourth of a six, Middleton’s Liam Taylor was rewarded when referee Lyson brought proceedings to a halt with 79 seconds of the round left.
Beswick’s Kane Gardner was given a good workout by Sheffield’s Nathan Hardy before edging home 39-38 for referee Sarginson.
THE VERDICT Another clean sweep for the home boxers.
