HEMSLEY HAMMERED
Andy Whittle sees Giles secure win number two in double-quick time
HUMBERSTON MARCH 9 WHOLE SHOW ATMOSPHERE
ONE-FIGHT Grimsby novice Levi Giles was in no mood for hanging around when he opened proceedings on this four-bout Carl Greaves promotion at the Beachcomber Club. Giles needed just 96 seconds of a scheduled four-rounder to put paid to the hopes of Yate’s Harvey Hemsley. Having come under increasingly heavy fire from the outset, and taking some serious punishment against the ropes, Hemsley was duly rescued by referee-for-the-night Shaun Messer.
There were a couple of naughties from the pumped-up Giles. A punch on the break earned him quite a lecture from Mr Messer, as did his errant use of the head. However, from the point inside the opening 20 seconds when Levi crashed home two huge rights upstairs, there was only ever going to be one outcome.
Over six rounds, former English lightweight champion Kevin Hooper kept busy against Newark’s Fonz Alexander in what turned out to be quite a watchable affair. Grimsby’s Hooper ultimately won 60-55, with the shared session doubtless being the closer second.
Quite a noisy little bunch had made the journey from Yorkshire to cheer on Bradford first-timers Jermaine Springer and Zeeshan
Khan, and both boxers obliged by posting shutout victories in their fours against experienced opposition.
The muscular Springer, switching at times, proved too strong for Hungarian Norbert
Szekeres, with a right uppercut in the dying moments of the contest snapping back the visitor’s head. Meanwhile, Khan held centre ring and mixed things up nicely en route to victory against Stockport’s Jamie Quinn.
THE VERDICT Smiles all round at the seaside venue, with Lincolnshire and Yorkshire supporters both seeing their men triumph.
