AFTER EIGHT

Three eight-rounders see home boxers victorious

- Andy Whittle

THREE eight-rounders ran their full course on this Errol Johnson promotion at Kings Hall. Having made the majority of the early running against Sheffield’s Chris Dutton, Luke Caci found himself pegged back somewhat by a spirited finish from the Yorkshireman. Referee Kevin Parker scored the feisty affair – which saw both boxers marked below the eye – 78-74 for Newcastle-underlyme’s Caci.

Macclesfield’s Jake Haigh proved increasingly dominant against Latvian Edgars Sniedze who, well bested, was docked a couple of points for holding in the second half by Mr Parker, who tallied 80-70 to Haigh. Patient throughout, Jake picked his shots nicely and handed the visitor a steady beating.

Mr Parker also officiated the shutout eight that saw Stoke’s Kieran Mclaren

triumph over Newark road warrior Fonz Alexander. Fonz, beaten over six just a week earlier, never looked like troubling the tidy home boxer.

For the third show on the bounce, referee Shaun Messer found himself waving off the opening contest with less than a round having elapsed. The latest quick-fire victor – winning with 10 seconds of the first to spare – was Burton’s Leon Gower, who sent Latvia’s Dmitrijs Gutmans sprawling with a huge right hook. Gutmans beat the count but was not allowed to box on. It had been set for four.

Swadlincote first-timer Ross Hollis

decked Aberystwyth’s Sean Gorman twice in the third. On the second occasion he dropped Gorman to all fours with a left to the body, and it was halted 15 seconds shy of the end of the penultimate round. Mr Messer officiated.

Popular local novice Nathan Heaney boxed nicely against Stourbridge-based

Emmanuel Moussinga, with Mr Messer scoring 40-37 for Heaney.

Bargoed’s Gary Cooper proved the party pooper when he outpointed Stoke’s

Owen Jobburn 39-38, banking the opening two rounds and sharing the last for referee Parker.

THE VERDICT It’s cold and snowy outside, but the spectators are warmed by some decent fare.
