KEEPING BUSY

Summers and Clarke stay sharp and target bigger fights, writes Daniel Mole from ringside

BLACK COUNTRY pair Ricky Summers and Lennox Clarke recorded victories on BCB Promotions’ six-fight card at Walsall Town Hall as they bide their time ahead of a return to title action.

Tipton light-heavyweight Summers topped the bill as he eased past Tayar Mehmed. The 30-year-old went six rounds with the deceivingly durable Bulgarian. Referee-for-the-evening Martin Williams scored the contest 60-53.

Halesowen super-middleweight Clarke blasted out Wilmer Gonzalez inside a round. Clarke, who was due to challenge English Champion Darryl Williams on the postponed Billy Joe Saunders versus Martin Murray bill, punished his Nicaraguan opponent after Gonzalez came in 13lbs over the 172lbs agreed limit. “Dangerous” came flying out the blocks and, after a couple of stiff jabs and an innocuous looking shot to a fleshy midriff, dropped Gonzalez. He failed to make the count as Williams waved off the contest at 1-57.

Dudley middleweight Ryan Aston’s own hopes of a return to title action were left in tatters as Wiltshire’s Anthony Fox recorded a third successive victory. Aston was dropped by a stiff straight right in the fourth and final round. “Tank” recovered but not well enough to stop Fox claiming a 40-37 victory.

Polish amateur stand-out Damian Kiwior made it back-toback victories since turning pro as he defeated Mario Petrov.

Showing fast hands – with footwork to match – the welterweight cruised to a 40-37 win against the game Bulgarian.

Derby welterweight Sajid Abid

inflicted a 14th consecutive defeat over Braintree’s Dylan Draper as he moved to 5-0. The 23-year-old has fought just once a year since turning over in 2014.

Burton’s Leon Gower overcame Evesham’s Brett Fidoe as he homes in on a shot at the vacant Midlands Area super-bantamweight Title. Wily and dangerous, Fidoe could feel a little aggrieved at the 40-37 scoreline despite the end result being the correct one. Just.

THE VERDICT Most tick along nicely but disastrous result for Aston.
