ONE TO WATCH
Lauren Price is making strides at middleweight, writes John Dennen
COMMONWEALTH GAMES gold medallist Lauren Price is one to watch. After triumphing at Gold Coast 2018 she is currently competing at the European championships in Bulgaria. Her performance there will help determine whether she stays at middleweight or moves back down to welter.
“Most of my success has come at middleweight, European bronze, Commonwealth bronze, Commonwealth gold,” Price tells Boxing News. “I got bronze in Glasgow in 2014 so this time [the Commonwealth Games in Australia] it was better. The aim was to get gold and I pulled it off.”
“Going into [the final against Caitlin Parker] I knew it was going to be tough because it was in her backyard. But we had a training camp out in Canberra and I sparred her a couple of times. The spars were quite close,” Lauren continued. “I knew I was a lot quicker than her, the plan was just to wait for her, counter-punch, hit and move. I pulled it off.
“After the fight, before the decision I was really confident because I just knew every time she was coming towards me I was making her miss and pulling off whether it be the right hook or the spin off with the right hook. They were the eyecatchers. I was confident.
“There’s no better feeling than being on top of that podium.”
