LOMACHENKO’S KRYPTONITE

-

MIKEY GARCIA seems to be the forgotten man of the mythical pound-for-pound list. In my opinion, he’s not given the credit he deserves for the impressive career he has forged thus far. Garcia [below] is a four-weight world titlist, and if you look back through his fights, you’ll see that he’s never really come close to losing so far. Fellow world lightweight belt-holder Robert Easter Jnr is a giant at 135lbs, and will present a new challenge for Garcia. If he wins, as expected, let’s hope we see him get the Vasyl Lomachenko fight next. If they fight, I believe Mikey will prove himself to be Lomachenko’s kryptonite. Jamie Ingleby

PRICED OUT

I AM very upset with the BT Sport/ Boxnation situation regarding Tyson Fury’s recent comeback fight. As well as being a subscriber to Sky Sports, I’ve also subscribed to Boxnation since day one. I was very disappointed that the Fury fight was only shown on BT Sport, and not on Boxnation. I contacted BT Sport ahead of the fight, in order to find out how much it would cost to view it. They informed me that there was no option to purchase the fight as a pay-per-view. Instead, if I wanted to watch the fight, I would’ve had to pay £26 for a monthly subscription to the channel, plus a £35 admin charge. That’s £61 in total! There was no way I was going to pay that. I really hope that this doesn’t represent the future for boxing fans. Alan Bridge

CONCERNED SUBSCRIBER

AS a long-term Boxnation subscriber, I am not a football fan, and therefore do not have a subscription to the football-heavy BT Sport. This meant that I was unable to watch the Tyson Fury comeback fight at home. Instead, I had to watch it at a relation’s house, who has a BT Sport subscription. With Fury’s fight not being shown on Boxnation, I am concerned about the future of the channel. As for Fury himself, I wish him all the best on his return to the ring, but I now have strong doubts about him being able to regain his status as the world heavyweight king. Against very poor opposition in the shape of Sefer Seferi, he was all over the place. I cannot see Fury fighting a top opponent before the end of the year, let alone fighting for a world title. He is a million miles away from his former self at the current time. In my opinion, he needs at least four fights before he can even begin to think about challenging for world honours. John Farey

HAYE-CHISORA MEMORIES

I WAS very interested to read Declan Taylor’s comments in ‘The Panel’ (June 14), regarding the David Haye-dereck Chisora fight at Upton Park in July 2012. I was the official timekeeper for this contest. With it being the biggest fight that I’d ever had the pleasure of controlling at the bell, my blood pressure was up substantially at the time! There were around 35,000 supporters shouting their heads off, while millions were watching on their TVS at home. The atmosphere was fantastic, to say the least – certainly the best that I’ve ever experienced. I fully support Declan’s opinion. Ken Honniball

HAPPY RETIREMENT

CONGRATULATIONS to Paul Smith on his great career. I remember watching one of his fights a few years back, which he won. Just as he raised his arms in triumph at the end, my sister-in-law cooed: “They’re the sexiest armpits I’ve ever seen.” Takes all sorts, I suppose! Keep rolling with the punches, Paul. John Walsh
