Andy Whittle sees Hunt return from lengthy layoff with victory

-

THERE were just four bouts on this Black Country Boxing promotion at Kings Hall, uppermost among them an eight-rounder which pitched Tividale welterweight Stewart Davies in against far more experienced opposition in the shape of Stafford’s former Midlands Area champ Rob Hunt. The step up in class of opponent for Davies proved just a shade too much on this occasion, with Hunt, despite having been bested in the opening stages, earning the 78-76 decision of the evening’s referee, Shaun Messer. Hunt came on particularly strong in the closing round, during which Davies picked up a diagonal cut to the left eyebrow.

Leicester super-welter CJ Challenger claimed a 60-55 victory over Bulgarian

Teodor Boyadjiev. The visitor was never likely to cause too many problems for Challenger, having won just once in 15, but if banking some rounds was the plan, then everything went swimmingly for CJ. The out-of-his-depth Boyadjiev looked to tie the superior home man up from an early stage.

Light-heavy Luke Caci, from Newcastle-under-lyme, improved noticeably in the second half of an always-entertaining four-rounder against Gateshead’s Craig Nicholson who, having returned recently from a long spell of inactivity, proved game throughout. A 39-37 triumph was Caci’s reward at the final bell, with Mr Messer doubtless awarding the second stanza to Nicholson, who followed up a hard left downstairs with a right uppercut. Nottingham-based Pole Patryk

Buczek had been halted on his debut in April, but he lasted the distance here against popular local middleweight

Nathan Heaney. Although he came off second best once more, Buczek was unfortunate not to nick a share of the final session, which turned into a real tear-up. Heaney otherwise bossed proceedings, scoring regularly to the body on the back of a busy jab. He was good value for his 40-36 win.

THE VERDICT Hunt’s experience gets him through against Davies.
