Daniel Mole sees Denny get some rounds in ahead of English title tilt

-

TYLER DENNY warmed up for his vacant English middleweight title shot against Reece Cartwright with a convincing victory over Lydney’s

Lewis van Poetsch at Walsall Town Hall. Slick southpaw Denny, topping BCB Promotions’ ‘England Awaits’ show – a nod to his upcoming September title tilt at the same venue – put in a punch-perfect display to record a landslide 60-53 victory. So dominant was Denny, referee-for-the-evening Kevin Parker scored the third round 10-8. The Rowley Regis man went through the gears and caught “Poochi” with every shot in his arsenal in a confidence-boosting performance ahead of his clash with Cartwright.

Walsall’s Shaun Cooper, fighting in his hometown for the first time, put on a powerful display against Worcester’s Michael Mooney, who was participating in his 60th professional contest. Mr Parker scored the bout 40-36 to the promising Cooper.

Former Pleck ABC boxer Levi Ferguson debuted against the tall frame of Warminster’s Paul Cummings. The Derry-born Cummings, who has racked up 25 appearances in just two years, knows how to survive and tried to keep the fight long, despite Ferguson’s best attempts to force the pace. Much the cleaner and busier, the local debutant recorded a 40-36 win.

Bloxwich’s popular James Beech Jnr cruised to a 60-56 victory over Sweden’s Edward Bjorklund. Beech, an interested spectator the night before at the Midlands Area super-bantam title fight in Walsall, boxed well throughout against the Lewisham-based lefty.

Birmingham’s Ijaz Ahmed bounced back from a surprise first defeat against Brett Fidoe in May to record a 60-56 triumph over Sheffield’s evergreen Anwar Alfadli. Ahmed got to grips with Alfadli’s unorthodox style and worked well behind a strong jab as he stepped up to six rounds for the first time.

THE VERDICT Denny warms up well for the biggest bout of his career to date.
