COLLYHURST AND MOSTON AWARDS

The great club celebrates its centenary and its latest season, writes Tommy Dix

THE legendary Collyhurst and Moston ABC held its awards night on July 13 at the Vasa club in Manchester. The venue was packed to capacity with the young boxers, their families plus professional boxers who made their first steps into our great sport at this club which is now in its centenary year.

The guests included ex-collyhurst boxers, both professional and amateur, former world champ Scott Quigg, who started his pro career under Brian Hughes at Collyhurst, former Commonwealth champ Matthew Hall, former Central area champ Paul Silva, world class boxer Pat Barrett and the talented Thomas Mcdonagh. There was also the new generation in Zelfa Barrett, Lyndon Arthur, Sean Ben Mulligan and not least Brian Hughes’ assistant coach, Mike Jackson.

If proof was ever needed that boxing is a family then this is it. They cheered the youngsters when they were awarded their prizes and all the boxers received a medal commemorating Collyhurst’s 100 year birthday.

The main trophy winners in the juniors were George Killeen – Coaches’ Boxer of the Year, Brogan Cunningham – Boxers’ Boxer of the season, Steven Mcdonagh – Best Newcomer, Mauro Silva – Most Improved Boxer. In the seniors Wycombe King, who enjoyed great success, was Coaches’ Choice for the Boxer of the Year.

Boxers’ Boxer of the Year also went to Wycombe. He received a third award in being voted Most Dedicated Boxer of the Year. Those awards to Wycombe were richly deserved as he travels to Manchester every day from Chester, an 80-mile round trip.

The senior amateur coach, Tommy Mcdonagh made it his business to also present myself with the Centenary medal – thanks Thomas, it will be cherished.

The behaviour of the members of this club is an example to all. They are a credit to their club, community and families.
