Middleweight Ramtin Musah is taking to senior level with style

-

We speak to a rising middleweight star

HAVE you been boxing recently?

I boxed in the Tri Nations for England and won the gold medal, as a senior.

I boxed a lad from Scotland called Ayoub Darre. He used to box for Morocco in the WSB. He was very aggressive, quite a big lad but shorter than me. He came forward but I just outboxed him, took the centre off him and beat from there, and won a unanimous decision. Did you then start sparring with Anthony Fowler?

For his last camp I was there at least once a week.

We have good hard, tough spars. He’s a very come forward fighter, very strong and I’m quite elusive but I can stand and fight when needed to. He had an elusive opponent but Dave [Coldwell] said he was nowhere near the level I was and it showed when the fight came, because he blew through the lad.

It’s only your first year as a senior?

Because I won the Youth nationals last year I went to the Europeans. I found it quite a weird transition because I was always the strongest, I was always able to bully everyone as a Youth.

When you become a senior they tend to be able to take it more so I had to adjust my style. It took a lot at the start but I adjusted it and it came perfectly and since then it’s worked for me. I’ve started getting into the whole aim of the game, hit and don’t get hit. Instead of standing there and trading it out with people.

You can be a strong Youth but it doesn’t mean you’re going to be a strong adult because everyone there is 25 years old, 30, whatever and they’ve all had just as many fights as you.

So it was your first England Boxing Elite championships?

My first one. I turned 18 a couple of months before I entered it. Were you pleased to get to the semifinals?

I knew I could have done better [against Jordan Reynolds]. I do think I could have done a little bit more to have made it a little bit clearer to the judges… A 3-2 split loss isn’t the worse thing ever, but there’s always space for improvement. I’m looking forward to hopefully getting the chance again in the GB championships in December. I’ll be boxing but not sure against who yet.

All he [Reynolds] wanted to do was fight me.

His [aggressive] style makes him more prone to pick up injuries but overall he’s a very good boxer, he’s good with his head movement, in and out with his feet. But for me he just loads up the hooks a bit too much but that’s just my personal opinion. What are your ambitions?

I want to win the GB championships to get on to GB… Even though I’m young I want to show I’m good enough to jump in there with the big boys.

‘EVEN THOUGH I’M YOUNG I WANT TO SHOW I’M GOOD ENOUGH’
