BELLS-HELL FOR ‘RAMBO’

Debutant Jamieson opens with a stoppage win over Kalinovskij

-

BOXING returned to the Lanarkshire town of Bellshill for the first time since 1944, with referee-turned-promoter Paul Graham staging a three-bout show at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Strathclyde. Of the trio of four-rounders on the card – all officiated by Darren Maxwell – two ran their scheduled course and one finished early.

The bout that failed to go the distance ended with a secondround stoppage victory for Scottish first-timer David Jamieson, who proved too much for Dmitrij “Rambo” Kalinovskij.

The Lithuanian, who triumphs only rarely, seemingly boxes nowhere but in the UK now, with just one of his last 24 contests having been fought elsewhere. This defeat marked his third consecutive stoppage loss.

Glenboig’s former Commonwealth super-lightweight title challenger Eddie Doyle

stayed busy with a run-out against Stockport’s tough and experienced Jamie Quinn. Doyle did enough to take every session on Mr Maxwell’s card for a 40-36 win.

The clash between Paisley’s Craig Kelly [right] and Islington’s Jordan Grannum was adjudged a little closer than the Doylequinn fight, with Kelly claiming a 39-37 victory. Kelly, like Doyle, has previously reigned as a Scottish Area champion.

This was Kelly’s second points triumph on the bounce after enduring a dismal run of form which had seen him fall to four successive inside-the-distance losses.

Journeyman Grannum, meanwhile, has now fought a total of 17 times already this year.

THE VERDICT A perfect start to pro life for Jamieson.
