and again the Londoner held as Evans came in. Gharib attacked in the last – Evans’ nose was red and he was forced to hold – but the two knockdowns proved crucial. Mr Mccann refereed.

The upsets continued as Ukrainian

Dmytro Kostenko shocked Maidstone’s

Chris Lawrence with a well-deserved points win. Referee Mark Bates scored 40-37, which I thought hard on the loser. Lawrence showed fast hands and the first two rounds looked close, but Kostenko grew in confidence and well won the last two. Kostenko was warned for a low left in the third, and Lawrence was given time to recover. In the last, Kostenko really upped the pressure, and Lawrence ended with reddening around the left eye.

Idris Hill, a Nigerian based in Westcliff-on-sea, knocked out Barking’s Reece Smith in the second of a scheduled six. Hill was always the aggressor but Smith moved, hit back when he could and covered up when trapped on the ropes. But in the second a left hook

to the body sent Smith crashing down – he rolled over, got to his knees, shook his head and started to rise as referee Lee Cook got to ‘nine’. Time was 2-30.

Brandon Ball (Rochester) halted Latvian Zigurds Krauklis after 33 seconds of the fourth and last round. Southpaw Krauklis fought back in the first two but seemed to be losing heart in the third. He indicated something was wrong with his left eye, walked back to his corner and removed his gumshield – referee Mccann would have none of it, took him to a neutral corner, examined him and gave the order to box on. Krauklis was quickly under pressure, and finally a sustained burst had him down for ‘five’.

Krauklis came out for the fourth with blood coming from his nose, and was quickly trapped on the ropes. Ball banged in a right to the body, and with Krauklis apparently about to go down Mr Mccann signalled the end.

Martin Foru (London via the Netherlands) outscored Latvia’s

Raimonds Sniedze, referee Bates scoring 40-35. Sniedze was wrestled over in the first and third, and floored in the fourth by a right to the body.

Previously based in Italy, Albania’s Xhuljo Vrenozi had plenty of compatriots supporting him on his British debut. He outscored Bulgaria’s Angel Emilov, Mr Cook tallying 59-56. The same official marked Liam Dillon (Chingford) a 59-55 winner over Michael Horabin

(Mottram in Longdendale).

There were 40-36 wins for James Castanzo (Bow) against Southwark-italian Victor Edagha (Bates); London’s Haisam Ali versus Brierley Hill’s MJ Hall (Cook); and Paul Greenidge (Abbots Langley) over Lydney’s Lewis van Poetsch

(Mccann).

THE VERDICT Revenge for Camacho, sensational win for Ramabeletsa, and two undercard shocks – but crowd violence raises its ugly head again.
