JARRELL MILLER 23-0-1 (20)

-

IN the opinion of most, you have the Big Three, then a sizeable gap, then the rest. Included among the chasing pack are Dillian Whyte, a man Anthony Joshua knows only too well, Luis Ortiz, the Cuban with whom Deontay Wilder is familiar, and Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, a mouthy American yet to be hushed by one of the champions.

It is perhaps because of this element Miller, undefeated in 24 fights, is set to challenge Joshua in June but can attract the kind of interest his record [his careerbest opponent is a toss-up between Johann Duhaupas and Mariusz Wach] shouldn’t necessarily be able to attract.

“He looks like he lacks discipline in terms of his eating,” is the Adam Booth assessment of Big Baby. “His conditioning and competitive rate isn’t the greatest. He’s obviously a big, solid dude who can swing a heavy shot, but in terms of skillset he’s quite limited from what I’ve seen.”

Booth, like many, isn’t all that interested in seeing Miller, 23-0-1 (20), welcome Joshua to America this summer but accepts it’s an inevitability at this point. When it happens, the 30-year-old from Brooklyn will at least bring a few things to the table the rest of the contenders can’t. For one, he boasts not a single defeat on his record, which means there is no blueprint on how to beat him. He talks a good game. He gets the game. He has been around the game, both as a boxer and high-level kickboxer, for years. Best of all, Miller, like the champions, is ignorant to the notion of defeat in that blissful way all undefeated boxers are before their zero is removed.

“Who potentially has the style to beat these big men?” Booth asks. “I don’t really see too many of these ranked heavyweights expressing the skillset to do the job. At the moment, you’ve got Wilder, Joshua and Fury, and then the rest. It’s almost like the Super League and then the next division down. That’s how big the gulf is between them.”
