SCOTTISH HAT-TRICK
Mick Kane sees three rising Scots secure wins at prestigious venue
THE prestigious St Andrew’s Sporting Club held their Burns Night Extravaganza show at the Radisson Blu Hotel, featuring three of Scotland’s rising prospects. Martin Harkin took on Nicaraguan Miguel Aguilar in the main event. The Dumbarton boxer worked the jab well in the first, but Aguilar made a fight of it in the second by landing several body shots. Harkin regained control of the fight in the third and it was no surprise when he knocked Aguilar to the canvas in the fourth. Aguilar was up at ‘seven’, but referee-forthe-evening Kenny Pringle stopped the bout, deeming Aguilar to be in no position to continue.
Aberdeen’s Boris Crighton, who had scored stoppage wins in his two previous fights, recorded another against Latvian southpaw Arturs Kulikauskis. Crighton got caught a few times early in the first, but he finished the round on top, with Kulikauskis suffering a cut. The second session continued as the first had finished. Referee Pringle decided he had seen enough as Crighton worked Kulikauskis’ body, ending the contest at 1-48.
First up on the night was Glasgow portsider Nathaniel Collins, who fought Liverpool’s Ricky Starkey.
Collins started well, landing several good left hands. The fight took a turn for the worse in the second, as Starkey continually grappled and wrestled Collins, with referee Pringle having to deduct a point from the Merseysider. Moving into the third, Starkey continued his antics, giving Mr Pringle no option but to disqualify him at 1-18. Collins, when given the opportunity, showed he has plenty of skill. It’s just a pity he wasn’t allowed a chance to showcase it more.
THE VERDICT The home boxers maintain their 100 per cent records.
