AFTERNOON DELIGHT

George Storr is north of the border to witness a trio of teatime tussles

-

DEAN SUTHERLAND topped the bill on Kynoch Boxing’s injury-hit afternoon show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The Aberdonian southpaw wowed the crowd and was aggressive from the off, forcing Islington’s

Jordan Grannum onto the back foot. Towards the end of the first round, the Scot forced Grannum to the ropes before stepping left and delivering a stunning right hand to the solar plexus, the sound of which echoed around the hall. Sutherland landed the same impressive shot in the second, forcing a rare look of discomfort from small hall stalwart Grannum. Sutherland took every session on referee Darren Maxwell’s card – 40-36 – and is one to watch out for.

Glasgow’s Ross Murray entered the ring a little under the weather and was lucky to walk away a 58-56 winner against Middleton’s

Steven Maguire, as scored by Mr Maxwell for triallist referee Paul O’connor. Maguire was consistently the more accurate boxer and pinned Murray back with a flicking southpaw jab, before landing a jolting lead uppercut at the end of the opener. More precise work from Maguire in the second stanza left Murray in real trouble, with a large swelling under his right eye. The Scot showed determination and aggression to force his way back into the fight.

Boxing News gave him the last three rounds and Maguire the first three. The visitor may feel a little hard done by. Scottish cruiserweight champion Jay

Mcfarlane beat Leicester’s Miles Willington up at heavyweight. Mcfarlane frustrated his corner by neglecting to work his jab, although he did target the body well. He was caught out by Willington’s left hand at times, though the East Midlander fatigued quickly and was unable to sustain his attacks. A well-placed right uppercut stunned Willington in the last, but Mcfarlane was unable to end the contest early. Referee Maxwell marked the bout 40-36 in favour of the Glaswegian.
