RINGSIDE REST & CARE HOME
The word about the residential home for retired boxers is spreading all over the world
SUPPORT for the Ringside Rest and Care Home continues unabated, we’re pleased to say, and the word is spreading quickly.
Firstly, a massive thank you goes to Luke Caci for supplying the headguard that will be used by Ian Cawley for his marathons on April 7 and May 26. As well as a standout runner, Luke is an undefeated boxer from Newcastle-underlyme who will be dropping down to super-middleweight for his next fight on April 13.
Secondly, Ringside Rest and Care Home are being given three signed boxing gloves auction later in the year. All three will have fixed reserves and the highest bidder wins. The gloves have been signed by the following:
Glove 1: Carmen Basilio, Bob Foster, Gene Fuller, Don Fuller, George Chuvalo, Carlos Ortiz, Ruben Olivares, Aaron Pryor and Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez.
Glove 2: Ken Norton, Micky Ward, Dicky Eklund, Leon Spinks, Emile Griffith, Pernell Whitaker, Tony “The Tiger” Lopez, Michael Carbajal, Aaron Pryor, Jimmy Williams, Reggie Johnson and “Mr Superbad” Freddie Mack.
Glove 3: James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith, Ruben Olivares, Carmen Basilio, Alexis Arguello, Marvin Hagler, Ricky Hatton and James “Buster” Douglas.
In addition to this, we are delighted to confirm that a number of notable boxers have agreed to donate other priceless bits of attire to the cause. Joining Gerry Cooney is Matthew Hilton, the former IBF super-welterweight champion, Eamonn Loughran, the former WBO welterweight champion, Darrin Van Horn, the former IBF super-welterweight champion, Michael Katsidis [pictured], the former WBO interim lightweight champion, and Barry Michael, the former IBF featherweight champion.
Other boxers generously offering similar donations include Australia’s Daniel Dawson, Welshmen Jason Cook and Jamie Arthur, Americans Brian Vera, Rod Salka and Perry Ballard, Wayne Elcock, Ben Jones, Martin Gethin, Emil Markic, Lolenga Mock, and Bash Ali
Ray Medel, meanwhile, has kindly donated a T-shirt from his fight against 1984 Olympic champion Paul Gonzales, while Glenn Catley, the former WBC super-middleweight champion, has kindly contributed a glove.
Finally, several of the fighters who boxed at York Hall last week wore the Ringside Rest and Care Home logo on their shorts, and Anthony Joshua, the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion of the world, has agreed to wear the logo on his kit for his fight against Jarrell Miller on June 1 in New York.
