Dave Parton watches ‘King’ Arthur put Romero to the sword
LYNDON ARTHUR dispatched Gonzalo Romero with a concussive right hand on the bell to end the opening frame of a scheduled eight-rounder on a Black Flash promotion at Middleton Arena. At first, the Manchester man observed while his Spanish opponent bounced in and out of range. Close to the end of the session, Arthur [pictured] floored Romero with a straight right from centre ring. Romero beat the count, but a precise onslaught, finishing with another right, ended the contest, as referee-forthe-evening Darren Sarginson correctly waved it off.
Well-supported local Kildare Ward outpointed Chichester-zambian Mwenya Chisanga 39-37. Ward was forced to work hard for the victory over his southpaw opponent, who bloodied his nose in the second and was competitive throughout. Ward’s aggression and superior shot selection saw him prevail. Manchester’s Sean Fennell
impressed in forcing Glasgow’s
Gary Mcguire to be withdrawn at the end of the third of a planned four-rounder. Fennell was in terrific condition and showed excellent variation to head and body to overcome the game but outgunned Mcguire. Liverpool’s Harry Woods successfully transitioned into the pro ranks by outpointing Llanelli’s
Spencer Thomas
39-37. It was a scrappy affair and neither man created enough space, which stifled the action. Woods had the better fundamental skills, landed the cleaner shots and generally outworked Thomas.
Mancunian Adam Hague was slated to box six rounds against the Barcelona-based Michael Carrero. However, the bout was cut short and ruled a technical draw at 2-04, after the doctor withdrew Carrero, due to a nasty cut above the Nicaraguan’s left eye following a clash of heads.
THE VERDICT Heavy-handed Arthur looks ready for title level.
