Terry Dooley watches Heffron return to the win column
LOCAL boy Mark Heffron got back to winning ways against Cameroon’s Serge
Ambomo on a VIP promotion at the Leisure Centre. Heffron was stopped by Liam Williams in a British middleweight title tilt in December and has since hooked up with trainer Stephen Foster Jnr. Heffron landed a big right hand to bloody his Sheffield-based opponent’s nose in the fourth. Referee Darren Sarginson awarded Heffron a 60-54 win, but the real test will come back at title level.
Oldham’s Aqib Fiaz turned pro with a decision victory over Ibrar Riaz of Reading. Riyaz was strafed with a variety of shots and told the opposing corner that they had a decent fighter on their hands after referee Phil Edwards scored it 40-36. Meanwhile, Manchester’s Jake
James seemed to have easily outpointed Digbeth’s Ben Fields – including a point deduction in the third when Fields hit James on the back of the head – only for Mr Edwards to produce a baffling 38-37 card. Everyone else gave James all four rounds, only for Edwards to produce a scorecard that made as much sense as a nun at a death metal concert.
Oldham’s Jack Kilgannon beat Port Talbot’s Geraint Goodridge. Kilgannon’s body attacks almost finished the fight in round six, but Goodridge saw it out before losing 60-54. Mark Leach was also the recipient of a 60-54 scoreline from Mr Sarginson. The Salfordian traded late on with Georgia’s Khvicha
Gigolashvili, and deservedly came out on top at the end.
Brighton’s Sebastian Eubank boxed his way to a 40-36 success from Mr Edwards against Lithuanian Remigijus
Ziausys in front of his famous father, Chris Eubank Snr. Elsewhere, Beswick’s Kane Gardner battered Canning Town’s Lee Hallett from the get-go, before eventually forcing referee Sarginson to stop the fight at 2-24 of the fourth (set for six).
THE VERDICT Heffron begins his rebuilding process with a victory.
