FINE MARGIN

‘Cannon’ Carr edges Southern Area title fight by a whisker

-

MTK served up a Sunday afternoon helping at Maidstone Leisure Centre. Headlining a six-fight bill, Sidcup’s

DP Carr went in against Basildon’s similarly unbeaten Lewis Adams, with the vacant Southern Area superfeatherweight title up for grabs.

Despite picking up a cut to the left eye when heads clashed in the fourth, Carr emerged a victor by the tightest of margins at the conclusion of a nip-andtuck bout. Referee Jeff Hinds scored him a 96-95 winner.

After a long wait for his first victory, Brierley Hill’s MJ Hall had won his last two but was unable to complete the hat-trick in what was his 50th pro outing. Promising local Lenny Fuller thwarted his ambitions by deservedly taking the 40-36 decision of Mr Hinds at the culmination of a switch-hitting affair which saw him enjoy success with right uppercuts. Neither Sheerness southpaw

Martin Mcdonagh nor his far more experienced Derbyshire opponent,

Lee Connelly, had ever won inside the distance, so there was no real surprise that their six ran its full course. Referee Ian John-lewis rewarded Mcdonagh, who worked well to the body, with a 60-54 win.

Ashford’s Jack Ewbank went in against Newark centurion Fonz

Alexander in another six and took the 60-54 verdict of Mr John-lewis. Alexander played his part though and ensured many of the sessions were close. Similarly to Ewbank, Maidstone’s Bradley Haxell and Bromley’s James Hawley had won all three via the long route and did so again. The well-supported Haxell, improving throughout, earned a 40-36 triumph from third man Hinds against Worcester’s Michael Mooney.

Meanwhile, Hawley, a little cocky and hands-down at times, also won 40-36 against Southwark-italian Victor

Edagha. The visitor twice seemed fortunate not to receive a count from Mr John-lewis in the penultimate session after his glove appeared to brush the canvas.

THE VERDICT A first professional belt for Carr, but only just.
