60-SECOND INTERVIEW

‘MIKE TYSON WAS THE BEST. HE KNOCKED EVERYONE OUT!’ Craig Derbyshire

-

When and why you started boxing:

I used to do MMA before I was into boxing. I went down to one of Niall Almond’s classes at the Almond Boxing Academy. I ended up doing more boxing than MMA training, so I turned over and just went on from there. I was about 21 years old when I started.

Favourite all-time fighter:

My favourite fighter in history is Mike Tyson. He used to just knock everyone out!

Best fight you’ve seen:

I’ve seen so many great fights over the years. I couldn’t think of just one.

Personal career highlight:

Winning the English superflyweight title against Nathan Reeve [ud 10 – May 2019]. He had beaten me over four rounds in our first fight [in September 2017], so it was nice to rectify that loss on my record.

Toughest opponent:

I’d probably say either Charlie Edwards [l rsf 4 – January 2015] or Sunny Edwards [l pts 4 – December 2016] – the two brothers.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

My biggest strength is my right hand. My weakness is that I go to war too much and make some fights harder than they need to be.

Training tip:

Make sure you get your early runs in out on the road. That’s really important for your fitness.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

It’s got to be a pepperoni pizza from Pizza Range in Doncaster!

Best friends in boxing:

My trainer, Niall Almond.

Other sportsman you would like to be:

I like running, so I’d have to say Sir Mo Farah.

Last film/tv show you saw:

Gold Rush. It’s a reality TV show about gold-miners.

Who would play you in a film of your life:

Definitely Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone.

Have you ever been starstruck:

I don’t think that I ever have been.

Last time you cried:

When my youngest daughter, Rosie, was born.

Best advice received:

Train hard, fight easy.

Worst rumour about yourself:

I’ve never heard any rumours about myself.

Something not many people know about you:

I’ve got four kids.
