60-SECOND INTERVIEW
Paul Wheeler talks to a man with a 100 per cent KO ratio
‘I DON’T LIKE PLAYING FOOTBALL, BUT I’D LIKE TO EARN THE MONEY THAT FOOTBALLERS GET PAID!’ Andrew Cain
When and why you started boxing:
I started boxing because I was getting into fights when I was a kid, so I thought I might as well use my aggression in a positive way. I went to the Everton Red Triangle gym when I was 10 years old and just fell in love with the sport. I had my first bout when I was 11.
Favourite all-time fighter:
Hard one, that. I’d have to say Mike Tyson.
Best fight you’ve seen:
Probably the first Arturo Gattimicky Ward fight.
Personal career highlight:
My best achievements so far have come in the amateurs, where I won five national titles.
Toughest opponent:
I’ve had a few hard fights, so it wouldn’t be fair to name just one.
Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
I’d say that my main strength is my boxing brain and IQ. As for weaknesses, I’d like to think that I haven’t got any!
Training tip:
Train hard and stay dedicated.
Favourite meal/restaurant:
A steak from Miller & Carter would be my favourite meal.
Best friends in boxing:
There are no friends in boxing, lad!
Other sportsman you would like to be:
I don’t like football, but I’d like to earn the money they get! I think I’d rather be a snooker player above anything else.
Last film/tv show you saw:
I’ve been watching Peaky Blinders
recently.
Who would play you in a film of your life:
Tom Hardy would be my choice.
Have you ever been starstruck:
When I met Sugar Ray Leonard. He came to visit the gym a couple of years ago.
Last time you cried:
I think it was when my goldfish Freddie died!
Best advice received:
Always be true to yourself.
Worst rumour about yourself:
I haven’t heard anything yet!
Something not many people know about you:
I’ve stopped all five of my opponents in the pros so far.
‘AS FOR WEAKNESSES, I DON’T THINK I HAVE ANY!’
‘LAST TIME I CRIED WAS WHEN MY GOLDFISH DIED’
