Another pro show battles through some difficult obstacles

-

YET another show, troublesome in the making for a variety of reasons, including a boxer simply failing to show up for the weigh-in, went ahead regardless at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park. Four bouts made up the fare and the result being three distance victories and a single early finish for the home boxers.

Liverpool southpaw Joe Kavanagh, inactive for almost two years, secured victory number four by outpointing in-demand Ghanaian Benjamin Lamptey 40-36 on the card of Preston referee Jamie Kirkpatrick. It was Lamptey’s fifth appearance in a British ring since September, during which he hasn’t won a single round. One assumes the 33-yearold, who honed his skills at the City Engineer’s Yard in downtown Accra, doesn’t make the long trip home between bouts. First-timers Thaun Wright and Desire Adami both triumphed over four. Ellesmere Port super-lightweight Wright conceding a chunk of weight to tattooed Driffield veteran Danny Little but still impressed considerably just days after his 20th birthday, emerging a 40-35 winner for Mr Kirkpatrick, having floored his more experienced opponent with an overhand right at the top of the third.

Popular Birkenhead welterweight Adami, who similarly conceded weight to another newcomer in the shape of Rochdale’s Richard Helm, took the 40-36 decision of Manchester’s Darren Sarginson at the conclusion of an increasingly one-sided affair.

The night’s sole inside the distance win was secured by Widnes novice Leon Willings who, having outpointed Padiham’s Sean Devlin on his debut four months previously, needed less than a round of his scheduled four to hand Nottingham’s heavier Tim Ventrella a fourth stoppage loss in just eight outings. Counted by third man Sarginson after being tagged by almost the first punch thrown in anger, Tim found himself on the receiving end of several meaty shots to the head before another burst upstairs sent him over sideways as the referee moved in with 47 seconds of the round still remaining.
