LEWIS RETAINS
Daniel Herbert watches Syrett defeat Miller to retain Southern Area title
JUST 11 weeks after winning the Southern Area middleweight title at York Hall, Lewis
Syrett made a successful first defence when he outpointed Dalton Miller over 10 rounds atop this Goodwins bill.
Syrett, a southpaw from Halling in Kent, won 98-92 for referee Mark Bates, which suggests eight rounds to two. I had it a round closer, but there was no doubt that after Acton’s Miller’s aggression had earned him the opening two sessions, Syrett worked his way on top.
Marylebone southpaw Joshua Ejakpovi earned a routine 60-54 verdict from referee Chas Coakley over Jordan Grannum (Islington) while the remaining seven contests were all over four and ended in 40-36 victories.
The Frimpong twins were both meant to be in action, but in the end Courtney was a ringside spectator as Lewis Frimpong (Oxford) landed good rights to outwork tough Ghanaian
Raymond Commey at featherweight. Ruislip middleweight Sean Robinson hurt
Kearon Thomas with a left hook to the body in round two but the gutsy Walsall boxer made it to the final bell. Sutton cruiserweight Jake Caswell had a winning pro debut against
Ossie Jervier of Willesden. Those three bouts were overseen by Mr Coakley, while Mr Bates handled four. Slough super-welter Amar
Kayani pleased his noisy fans with a brisk win over Birmingham’s Josh Hodgins, who bled from the nose and was cut on the left eye.
Tall Bristol featherweight Sam Little picked off Hull’s Luke Fash with southpaw left hands for a debut victory, but Hull did have a winner in Chelsey Arnell, who kept the rights coming to outwork Sangeeta Birdi over four-twos.
Opening the show, Dunmow super-middle southpaw William Webber beat Lydney’s
Lewis van Poetsch, who finished with his
usual bloodied nose.
