LESS than a month after being outpointed while contesting the Midlands Area welterweight crown at Fenton Manor, Derby’s Alex Fearon dropped down a division and went vacant title hunting once more, stepping in at short notice to exchange pleasantries with Tamworth’s Tommy Silcox at the H Suite. Could he, at the fifth time of asking, finally secure an elusive Area title?

With the clock running down in the opener and with Fearon having had the better of things behind the jab I was beginning to wonder if this might just be his night. But barely had my musings begun when Silcox, who had landed the more eye-catching stuff, spotted a gap through the middle, fired in a right and the Derby man was down.

The crowd went nuts as Fearon, somewhat shakily, regained his feet. Referee Shaun Messer had a good look, allowed things to go on and was close on hand to intervene at 2-49 when a weighty right sent Alex over backwards once more.

A trio of four-round contests all refereed by Solihull’s Chris Dean made up the undercard and all went the way of the unbeaten home boxers. Brummie Elliott Sowe got proceedings off to a winning start by besting Camden’s still winless Lee Devine, 39-37 though Lee did have his moments and a short left sent Elliott’s gum-shield flying early in the third

One-fight Chelmsley Wood novice Nyall Berry more than lived up to his “Non-stop” nickname. Relentless throughout, he proved too much for experienced Melksham operator Liam Richards. A short left sat Liam down late in the second and the 40-35 score at the finish came as no surprise.

In his third paid outing, Coventry’s Ingle stabled super-middleweight Bradley Goldsmith dominated against Lydney’s entertainer Lewis van Poetsch who having bagged himself a win just a week earlier never looked like repeating the feat. This one had 40-36 written all over it very early.
