HOLD THE JUDGES ACCOUNTABLE
IS ANYONE going to ask the Nevada Athletic Commission why all three ringside judges gave Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez the first four rounds and no one else did? Seriously, was there another living being of sane mind who could see how Canelo won those rounds?
I have seen countless Tweets, listened to several podcasts, I have read numerous reports and NOT A SINGLE PERSON saw that fight, particularly the first four rounds, the same way as the judges did. And don't tell me it was about where the judges were sitting. Whether ringside or watching on television, the only three people on planet earth who scored the first third of that fight 4-0 to Canelo were the ringside judges.
Can reporters stop wondering what happens next for the fighters and focus instead on what was very nearly a catastrophe for the sport of boxing. Daniel Jenkins
BOXING HAS MOVED ON
PLEASE can I echo the sentiments of Kevin Rowan on last week’s (May 5) letter's page. As a female boxing fan and keen amateur kickboxer, I had hoped that when round card girls disappeared due to Covid restrictions that they would not be re-introduced.
It’s so frustrating to reassure my daughter (a keen boxer), and the other girls and young women that I train with, that their place is fighting in the ring, when watching their idols involves the unnecessary spectacle of scantily-clad women parading around.
As the Boxing News cover showed last week, boxing has moved on. Kevin’s right, can the promoters do so too please? Helen Wilkinson
CANELO STILL GREAT
HERE we go. Canelo moves up a weight class after dominating the supermiddleweight and middleweight divisions and he is suddenly overrated. What nonsense! His body of work compares favourably with almost every active fighter. He took a risk, it didn't pay off, but a bad fighter overnight he did not become. Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson and Henry Armstrong, to name just three off the top of my head, failed to win titles when going up too high in weight. It happens. Let's not be so quick to write off the Mexican.

GREAT STUFF ON 'THE ROCK'
WHAT a fantastic piece on Gavin Rees by Oliver Fennell in BN. I vividly remember Gavin Rees and the three Pryce Brothers blazing a trail through the Welsh amateur scene in the '90s. Back then I wasn’t sure he’d turn out to be the cream of the crop from that group, but didn’t he do well? A great interview. Open, honest and a real pleasure to read.
